Business interruption insurance covers the income or gross profit you lose while recovering from an insured event, such as a fire or flood — not just the physical damage itself. It exists to keep the business trading, or replace what it can't earn while it can't trade.
Any business that relies on premises, equipment or key suppliers to trade is exposed to interruption risk. It's frequently the most underinsured part of a commercial programme, because the sum insured and indemnity period are harder to picture than the value of a building.
